ARGIVE DEFENSE SYSTEMS STAFF
The Argive shield was popular with the typical Greek Hoplite warrior as early as 700BC. Also called in Greek, the “Aspis” it was a shield typically three feet in diameter. It was made of wood faced with leather and bronze. Though defensive in purpose it was from behind this shield that the Hoplite would launch his attacks and go on the offensive. As important as it was to utilize the shield as protection for the individual soldier, it was just as important that the shield guard the man to his right. The Argive shield became even more crucial than the weapons carried. To the warriors of Sparta the shield was so important to the survival of its soldiers and nation that harsh punishment awaited those warriors that failed to keep it upright in battle and woe to the man who misplaced or had it taken from him. This is epitomized in the Spartan saying, “Come back with your shield…or on it”.
The Greeks typically utilized various symbols on their personal shields. The Spartans were different in that they all eventually utilized the same symbol ( ^ ) or L as their shield device. This was initially to show the geographic location of their nation which was Laconia in southern Greece. Eventually this came to symbolize their unity as a people and nation. This also embodied their belief that the demands of the state must never interfere with independence and freedom of the individual citizen.
It is the belief of us here at Argive Defense Systems that it is imperative as responsible citizens to develop and cultivate our own personal security and warrior spirit. Not only for ourselves but for our family, neighbors and fellow citizens against those in our society who would prey upon them. Our defense is our mindset, fighting spirit, skills, our shield. When breached we must go on the offensive. This is not about revenge. This is about keeping the “wolves” at bay and doing what must be done to survive. Every time a warrior is born in spirit the darkness recedes that much further.
